A Shield Against Bacteria and Dust Mites

In the ever-evolving world of textiles, the quest for fabrics that not only feel luxurious against the skin but also promote health and well-being is relentless. Enter TENCEL™ Lyocell, an innovative fabric that goes beyond the conventional, offering not just comfort but also a formidable defense against bacterial growth and dust mites. In this blogpost, we delve into the scientific research that makes Lyocell an unfavorable environment for bacteria and dust mites.

Superior moisture wicking

Through moisture management, TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers absorb moisture efficiently, as measured by the Vapor Uptake test and Water Retention Value. In comparison to polyester and synthetics, and even to cotton, there is less available moisture formed on the surface of the fiber for bacteria to grow. Consequently, TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers provide a less favorable environment for bacterial growth. Particularly on three of the odor-relevant bacteria types tested (Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli), a significantly lower growth rate was observed on TENCEL™ Lyocell compared to cotton and polyester under moderate humidity conditions.

The high moisture absorption ability also generates a less favorable ambience for dust mites compared to cotton, as proven by NF G 39-011, the only normed European test for dust mite growth.

"Furthermore, wood-based cellulosics such as lyocell fibers have a distinctively higher moisture sorption capacity than cotton [11, 12] and are therefore expected to bind more moisture, reducing its availability for bacteria and hence offer a less favorable milieu for bacterial growth. Smooth fiber structure

Lyocell fabric's resistance to static electricity stems from its smooth fiber structure and high moisture absorption capacity. The smooth surface minimizes friction, reducing the generation of static charges that often attract dust particles. Additionally, Lyocell's ability to absorb moisture helps neutralize static charges, preventing the fabric from becoming statically charged and, consequently, reducing its propensity to attract and retain dust.

This reduced adherence of dust to Lyocell fabric not only enhances its cleanliness but also creates an environment less favorable for dust mite growth, as lower dust levels provide fewer resources for these microscopic organisms to thrive.

TENCEL™ Lyocell fabric goes beyond mere comfort—it offers a pragmatic solution to bacterial growth and dust mite concerns. With its effective moisture management and resistance to bacterial proliferation, Lyocell emerges as a practical and reliable choice for bedding that prioritizes both cleanliness and comfort.
